Full immersion into medieval art: the 3 Maestà’s tour
This day and a half tour is mostly suitable for those who already know a bit about Siena and are more interested in finding out more about artworks and masterpieces from the 14th century. On the first day, your driver will take you to Siena where you will meet up your local guide, who will take you to the Opera del Duomo Museum, which holds the beautiful Maestà from Duccio di Buoninsegna-1311 and the second Maestà, from Simone Martini-1315, in the Mappamondo Hall of the town hall: you will here be able to point out differences and similarities between the two. Moreover, you cannot leave the town hall without seeing Ambrogio Lorenzetti’s frescoes, portraiting the ‘Buon Governo’ (lit. ‘The Good Government), referring to the life around Siena in the 14th century.
On the second day, your driver will take you Massa Marittima, where you will see your third and last Maestà of the tour in the Sacre Art Museum, the one by Ambrogio Lorenzetti in 1335, finding out some facts about this artwork. On the way back, after a tasty lunch break, you will stop by in San Galgano, popular for its 13th century church, unfortunately deprived of the roof due to centuries passing by; you will lastly walk up to the Rotonda di Montesiepi where the real ‘sward in the stone’ stands out!
