Pecorino, beer and “cinema”
This is a perfect tour for those who want to get away from the frenetic city centre and immerse themselves into nature, trying the typical products from out territory.
Your driver will be driving you to Pienza in the morning, where your local guide will tell you about the special history behind the birth of this little hamlet, an architecture gem from the Renaissance, which was born from a Pope’s Pio II Piccolomini’s dream.
After having admired the main place, where the Cathedral and the Piccolomini Palace stand out, built in very short time between 1459 and 1462, you will walk along narrow streets named under Romantic names, to then get to a panoramic terrace, with a beautiful view over the Val d’Orcia, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2004 as an example of “well preserved cultural landscape”; you will see the Amiata Mount soaring in the middle, which is also a natural border between Siena and Grosseto.
Once you will leave Pienza, you will cross the entire Val d’Orcia by car: this landscape is stunning no matter what season you will be visiting, with its colours, hills, cypresses, white roads, gullies, and you will surely stop by to take some pictures of this beautiful area of our region. Fun fact, some movies have actually been shot here, like “The English Patient”, “The Gladiator”, and the more recent TV series dedicated to the “Medici” family, with Dustin Hoffman.
Your next stop will be by a farm which produces the popular ‘Pecorino’ cheese from Pienza, where you will have the chance to try it out and find out about its production secrets.
You will move to San Quirico d’Orcia in the afternoon: this is a characteristic village in Val d’Orcia, and it’s today out of the most popular itineraries for tourists, however it was a very important stop within the ‘Via Francigena’, the pilgrim route, in the past. Even the Emperor Federico Barbarossa used to come here!
You will find two beautiful Romantic churches in the centre, then the monumental Chigi Palace from the 18th century, and also the ‘Horti Leonini’, a great example of Italian-style gardens, with boxwood hedges forming geometrical figures and a hidden rose garden. At the end of your tour around this village, you will stop by a small brewery overlooking the main street, where you will be able to visit the production plant and try their variety of beers, which even includes a cocoa-flavoured one! It is also possible to have a local cold cuts tasting upon request.
